ARTICLE I.: NAME

The name of this organization shall be Society of Physics Students of the University of Missouri-Columbia.

ARTICLE II.: PURPOSES

The purposes of this organization shall be:

a. To further communication among physics students.
b. To further communication between students and faculty of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
c. To gain information about the field of physics.
d. To promote careers in physics.
e. To serve the public.


ARTICLE III.: MEMBERSHIP

Section 1.
All those who become members of this organization during the Winter semester of 1988 shall be known as charter members.

Section 2.
Membership shall be open to any student, graduate or undergraduate, who has taken or is currently enrolled in a physics or astronomy course and to faculty members in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Membership shall also be open to any student with a specific interest in physics or astronomy.

Section 3.
Active membership shall be retained by the payment of dues at the beginning of each semester.

ARTICLE IV.: EXECUTIVE

Section 1.
The executive power of the Society of Physics Students (hereafter referred to as SPS ) shall be vested in the President.

Section 2.
The executive board shall consist of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer.

ARTICLE V.: NON-DICRIMINATION

SPS shall not discriminate on the basis of sex, religion, race, mental or physical disability, age, national origin, sexual orientation, ancestry, color or veteran status

BY-LAWS

ARTICLE I.: EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Section 1.
Each officer shall have a cumulative grade average of 2.00 and maintain it while in office.

Section 2.
The President shall have been enrolled in the University of Missouri-Columbia for at least one semester prior to election.

Section 3.
Officers shall serve until the time of the next election.

Section 4.
Officers shall be elected at the February meeting each year.

Section 5.
The organization Nominations Committee shall be appointed by the President with the approval of the Executive Board. The Committee shall receive nominations at the meeting held before the election meeting is held. The Committee shall be responsible for establishing the eligibility of the candidates and shall conduct the election.

Section 6.
The vote shall be by secret ballot. The officers shall be elected by plurality.

Section 7.
Only undergraduates in the Department of Physics and Astronomy are eligible to be elected officers.

ARTICLE II.: EXECUTIVE POWERS AND DUTIES

Section 1. President:
a. The President of SPS shall preside at all business meetings and shall be the representative of SPS before other groups.
b. The President shall meet with the organization advisor before each business meeting.
c. The President shall be informed of the duties of all executive officers in order to help coordination of all SPS activities.
d. The President shall submit a complete report of work done during his/her term of office for the next President.
e. The President shall make appointments to committees with the approval of the executive board.


Section 2. Vice-President:
a. The Vice-President shall, in the absence of the President, perform the duties of the President.

b. The Vice-President shall serve as Parliamentarian at business meetings.

c. The Vice-President shall act as the Program Chairman and shall plan projects, activities, and service projects in coordination with the President and the advisor of SPS and present such plans to the membership for final approval.


Section 3. Secretary:
a. The Secretary shall record accurate minutes of the business meetings.
b. The Secretary shall notify SPS members of the meetings.
c. The Secretary shall provide MSA, the advisor of SPS, and the Chairman of the Department of Physics and Astronomy with-a list of executive officers each semester.
d. The Secretary shall post a copy of the minutes of the meetings for all interested members to read.
e. The Secretary shall submit a complete report of the work done for the succeeding secretary.
f. The Secretary shall perform the duties of the President in the absence of the President and Vice-President.


Section 4. Treasurer:
a. The Treasurer shall keep a complete record of expenses of SPS functions.
b. The Treasurer shall authorize SPS expenses with the approval of the Executive Board.
c. The Treasurer shall plan the SPS yearly budget with the assistance of the advisor of SPS and the Executive Board.
d. The Treasurer shall give financial reports to SPS at each business meeting.
e. The Treasurer shall submit a complete report of the work done during the term for the succeeding treasurer.
f. The Treasurer shall perform the duties of the President in the absence of the President, Vice-President, and the Secretary.


Section 5. REMOVAL
Executive officers may be removed from office by resignation, by a 3/4 vote of the Executive Board, upon three unexcused absences from the regular business meetings as determined by the Executive Board, or by a 3/4 vote of the membership. An Executive officer may not be impeached unless a motion has been made at a previous meeting.

ARTICLE III.: EXECUTIVE BOARD

Section 1.
The Executive Board shall consist of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The advisor shall be an exofficio member of the Board with the power to vote in case of a tie.

Section 2.
The Executive Board shall meet when called by the President.

Section 3.
A quorum shall be 3/5 of the members of the Executive Board.

ARTICLE IV.: ADVISOR

Section 1.
At least one professor (assistant, associate, or full) in the Department of Physics and Astronomy shall be invited to serve as advisor to the Executive Board and member of SPS.

Section 2.
If necessary, the Executive Board shall invite a new advisor with the approval of the membership.

Section 3.
The chairman of the Department of Physics and Astronomy shall be invited to serve as an honorary member of SPS.

ARTICLE V.: DUES

Dues shall be $2.00 a semester, payable at the beginning of each semester.

ARTICLE VI.: MEETINGS

Section 1.
Regular meetings shall be held at least once each month.

Section 2.
The Executive Board of SPS with the consent of the advisor, proving that SPS members will be notified in advance, may call emergency meetings.

Section 3
For any voting procedures to take place at least 3/5 of members must be present.

ARTICLE VII.: PARLIAMENTARY AUTHORITY

The SPS shall follow parliamentary usages and practices as stated in Robert's Rules of Orders Revised, in the absence of any condition to the contrary in the constitution of the By-Laws.

ARTICLE VIII.: AMENDMENTS

Amendments to the By-Laws shall be presented at any business meeting by any member of SPS and shall be passed, after the second reading by a majority vote of the membership.

ARTICLE IV.: COMPLIANCE CLAUSE

We agree to abide by the established Student Organization and Student Life Policies listed in the Collected Rules and Regulations of the Board of Curators (M-Book) as well as all University and UM system rules, regulations, policies, and procedures, as well as all federal, state, and local laws.
