SPS Meeting 5-2-05
Since the picnic originally scheduled for last Friday was rained out, it will now be held this Friday, May 6, at 4:00pm. It will still take place at
Grindstone Park. (This may conflict with Senior Sendoff for some.) Lance will notify people who have already emailed him and tell them what
to bring. If you want to come and have not emailed Lance, do so.
Joe Willet will play this Thursday evening at the Artisan. People are encouraged to attend.
We will keep the fridge stocked and collecting money this summer. Since most of the officers will be gone,
John Gaddy (the new treasurer) will be in charge of this.
OFFICER ELECTIONS
The nominees were:
President -- Addie Dove, Gandhi, Kevin Roberts
Vice President -- Dan Hess, John Gaddy, Ben Wenger
Treasurer -- Ben Wenger, John Gaddy
Secretary -- Kevin Roberts
The new officers are:
President -- Addie Dove
Vice President -- Dan Hess
Treasurer -- John Gaddy
Secretary -- Kevin Roberts (that was a tough decision)
Also -- we have nine seniors graduating this year! Anyone who wants to be on the cheering squad for them should come
to graduation. It will be held at Sunday, May 15 at 11:00am at the Mizzou Arena. Come cheer!
Physics Club Meeting 4-4-2005
The Physics Open House will be this Saturday, April 9, from 9am – 2pm. Those who would like to help out should have contacted Dorina.
Everyone should plan on being there no later than 9am, probably earlier. Instead of grilling and selling food, we will be selling snacks from
the fridge to raise some money.
There will be a zone meeting on April 22/23 in Kansas. No one showed interest in going, after a big build-up from Lance.
He may email us with more info is he hears anything more.
A bulletin board is now available for use by SPS. It is in between the student pictures boards on the second floor. SPS related items may be posted there.
During the meeting, we decided on another T-shirt design. The shirts will be red with white letters that
say “MIZZOU PHYSICS” on the front and “We’re in it for the CHICKS!” on the back. Karen and Addie will put in the order on Friday,
and Lance will email everyone to see if they want shirts, and what size.
PICNIC! There will be an end-of-the-year physics picnic at Grindstone Park on Friday, April 29 at 5:00 pm.
An email will be sent out asking who’s going, and then who’s bringing what will be decided. There will definitely be brats.
At the next meeting (May 2), we will try and elect officers. Basically all of the positions will be open, so anyone who is interested
should be sure to attend the next meeting.
We will have a movie night next Friday, April 15, at 5:00 pm. “Flight of the Navigator” will be showing, probably in Physics 120.
Lance will email a reminder sometime next week.
Physics trip to Washington, D.C. – 9 people are going. Definite (sort of) tours include the NRL on Wednesday the 18th, and NIST on Tuesday the 17th.
Hopefully, that will leave time to visit the space hangar and the Air and Space Museum. Lance will email those who are going – drivers must be decided.
Off Note: Mike danced with a pole when he first showed up, and at one point during the meeting, was rapping.
Physics Club Meeting 3-7-2005
End of the Year Trip
Funds are a little shorter than anticipated, but the trip to D.C. is still a go. We plan on leaving Monday, May 16th and returning Thursday,
May 19th. Due to the shortage of funds, each participant will have to throw in $20-$40 to go. The exact amount that each participant will need to
contribute will depend on the number of us that go. Anyone who would like to participate in this trip MUST email me (lmgwvd@mizzou.edu) to
let me know AND give me a $20 deposit no later than next Friday (just before spring break). At this time, those of us who are going will meet to
discuss the details of the trip (itenerary, exact cost, etc.). We have many options for activities in D.C. including tours of NIST, NRL, the Air and Space
Museum, Smithsonian museums, general D.C. tourist attractions, and a few others.
T-Shirt
More ideas were thrown around, but nothing was decided.
Open House
Dorina will need us to work the Physics Departmetn Open House on Saturday, April 9. We will need to come in for a few hours in late morning - early
afternoon to manage demos and make a presentation to the public. Any and all help we can get would be appreciated.
Physics Club Meeting 2-7-2005
Announcements
-- Those interested in participating in the GRE/Qual meeting group should talk to Yve or Lance.
-- Dorina has mentioned that there may be a problem solving course offered in Fall 2005.
--Yve may try to organize a seminar for Physics students to help with finding jobs and internships, doing interviews, etc. This will probably occur in October.
-- The Physics movie Friday night (Feb 11th) will be “Real Genius” – 5 pm Rm. 120
“We should have bananas.” -- A t-shirt idea from Karen?
“Quantum mechanics is all fun and games until someone loses an i.”
-- Designs for a new t-shirt were discussed, although nothing was decided.
Melvin Mora Scholarship
--Yve estimates that we currently have about $8000, she would like to get to $10,000 ASAP. She thinks that the
fridge will bring in about $300 per semester, to be used for various physics club activities.
-- Physics club will be responsible for setting up the presentation for the Physics open house on April 9.
We also need to look into purchasing science toys to sell.
Physics Club Trip
-- SOAC has given us $356 for the trip.
-- We would like to go to Washington, DC, but we need to work out a budget. Karen, Lance, and Addie will meet on Thursday to discuss this.
-- Who will drive? Who is willing to take their vehicles? Could we rent something?
-- It is important to make this trip valuable to the students who are not able to go, as well as those who do. How can we do this?
Bring back information, posters, resources, etc.
Physics Club Meeting 12-6-2004
Physics trip possibly to DC.
Physics shirts are in. Contact Greg.
Movie postponed (again) probably until sometime in June.
Physics Club Meeting 10-4-2004
Duration: Approximately 5:10-6:10 pm
Topics Discussed:
Movie Night:
We are planning to watch “Real Genius” on Friday, October 15 at 6:00 pm. We plan on reserving one of the lecture rooms
on the first floor of the physics building (perhaps room 120??). Yve will provide the movie and popcorn for everyone.
Anyone attending should try to bring some kind of food/drink to share (chips, crackers, soda, paper plates/bowls, etc).
Anyone who would like to attend is welcome, even if you don’t bring us food.
Society of Physics Students (SPS) Zone Meeting:
The SPS (the national organization that our physics club represents) is having a meeting on November 12-13 in Cape Gerardo.
We would like to have at least a couple of members go to this meeting to represent our chapter and see what SPS is like on a national level.
Expenses (gas, room, etc.) will likely be paid by the department, but we are not certain at this point. Anyone who is interested should
email Whitney and let her know (whbrh7@mizzou.edu).
Membership:
Apparently many of us are not actually members of SPS. We need to change this. Whitney will look into getting the forms required
for all of us to join. If this will be your first year as a member, the physics department will pay your dues.
Shirts:
We discussed ideas for this year’s physics shirt. The chosen design is the nuclear hazard shirt. Karen will send Whitney the
design for this shirt. Whitney will then send it to all members so they can respond with orders. The shirts will be long sleeved, black
and green, and likely cost less than ten dollars.
One of the officers will send an email to all members to see if there is enough of a demand for last years shirt (with the Feynman quote)
to make it worth reprinting.
Physics Club Trip:
We are still throwing a few ideas around for the trip at the end of the academic year. A few ideas will be researched and we will
discuss the resulting possibilities on Oct. 15 (movie night).
Melvin Mora Scholarship Fund:
We are setting up a scholarship fund in the memory of Melvin Moora. We need to raise 10,000 dollars to set it up. We have already
accomplished around a quarter of this goal through donations and painting. A group of us met a couple of weeks ago and stained
Dr Henry White’s cabin to raise funds. This past Saturday (Oct 2) we met again and worked on painting Dr. White’s front porch.
We need to meet again to finish up the work at Dr. White’s home and a couple of other professors have requested our services,
so there is plenty to be done. We would like to meet on Saturday, Oct. 16 to finish the work at Dr. White’s. Right now, the following people plan on helping:
Lance
Yve
Karen
Brian (Karen’s boyfriend)
Mike Gramlich
Doug
Dan
Whitney
Nathan
Anyone else who could spare a portion of their Saturday (roughly 8am – 2pm) and would like to help would be greatly appreciated.
If you would like to help, email Yve (yesmb7@mizzou.edu).
